The recording industry in Manchester has taken another massive leap with the commencement of building work on its latest major studio.

Based in the Sharp Project, 80 Hertz Recording will have the personnel, the technology and the space to match the world’s greatest studios, and is set to attract major talent into the project when it is completed in early 2011.

Headphone honcho George Atkins and dubbing genius John “Fingers” Wood have designed the two-storey studio to allow recording, composition, mixing and mastering to take place for music, film scores, television and advertisements. They’ll also be hiring out studio space for start-ups and smaller digital businesses looking for professional audio quality. Surrounded by TV, web, film and ad companies in the Sharp Project, 80 Hertz will represent a vital element in the perfect digital ecosystem.

Of the new studio George Atkins said:

“Our unique selling point is the huge live room, allowing for beautiful natural acoustics in combination with the ability to use it for many ancillary uses, such as an events venue and photo studio. We also have scope to provide other forms of high quality content for the digital age, i.e. streaming live video footage of events and gigs via Sharp’s gigabit fibre internet connection.”

Sue Woodward OBE, Director for the Sharp Project, said:

“It’s tremendously exciting to have someone of this calibre in our building. 80 Hertz Studios is the jewel in The Sharp Project’s crown; it allows us to offer our other tenants another brand new facility right on site, which is fantastic. George approached us at just the right time. We were able to weave the recording studio into our plans so they had the freedom to create a space that suited their big ideas.”

80 Hertz is currently based in central Manchester, and their work with Lily Allen, The Twang, Twisted Wheel, Disney, Bandai UK, Nigel Martin-Smith and Dizzee Rascal’s own label have won Atkins and his studio plaudits from across the spectrum. The move north-east is a natural progression that builds on this success.
