The Sharp Project secures tenant for data centre
Manchester based ANS Group has been selected as the data centre tenant for the 20,000 sq ft (1, 858 sq m) space at The Sharp Project, Manchester’s digital and production complex in Newton Heath.
The company also has the option to take an additional 20,000 sq ft space in the building in the future which in total would create a 1,600 rack facility.
ANS Group, have agreed a 15 year lease on the space, and plan to invest £8 million in the data centre over the next 3 years which will house its NationalCloud Infrastructure and Desktop as a Service offering as well as secure colocation facilities to house computer systems, data storage and associated components such as telecommunication systems.
The facility will allow businesses to securely rent anything from a basic rack to a fully managed computer infrastructure minimising the chance of disruption to their business. Companies using the data centre facilities can also take advantage of two separate high speed connectivity networks that serve the building.
Paul Sweeney, Managing Director, ANS Group, said: “It’s great to be associated with The Sharp Project in this way. From this Tier 3 data centre we can offer our dedicated Infrastructure 3 solution or our hosted NationalCloud infrastructure both built on Cisco, NetApp, VMware and Microsoft technology.”
Sweeney adds: “The Sharp Project’s superfast connectivity and power and its Point of Presence (POP) link with the rest of the internet offers true diversity for communications and is a major reason for us basing a data centre here. This facility will enable us to grow our business and create up to 100 jobs over the next three years.”
Scott Fletcher, Chairman and Founder, said: “It’s been a fantastic year at ANS and this is a significant milestone in our history; we are delighted to be building this state of the art facility which will take advantage of all the latest technology, such as fresh air cooling and offering high density racks in the most efficient way possible, we have our sights on a PUE of 1.2. The Sharp Project has a special meaning to me as my dad worked there in the 80s and I remember spending a lot of time there as a teenager.”
Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council said: “To form this long-term partnership with ANS Group is another milestone for The Sharp Project. To be able to offer a purpose-built, state-of-the-art data centre at The Sharp Project is great news. This is yet another example of the public and private sector working together to drive forward our ambition of Manchester becoming a global digital city by 2020.”
Sue Woodward, Director of The Sharp Project said: “ANS Group is an ambitious Manchester based firm with an eye on the future. Scott Fletcher and his brilliant team fit like a glove at The Sharp Project. It’s great to have them on board. This facility will be available to any organisation from any sector that has a requirement to store computer and telecommunications hardware off site to ensure their business, which is reliant on technology, is resilient.”
This facility is to be constructed by Manchester firm Sudlows, who are leading data centre design and build specialists. With construction due for completion by March 2013, it will be able to accommodate a total of 400 racks, all standard 19 inches wide in varying depth, specific for rack mountable servers, routers or switches.
Co-location and rack space packages are available from as little as one unit (1U) to dedicated part or full racks in a ‘carrier grade’ data centre which offers resilient power, cooling and connectivity backed up with on-site technical staff.
Sweeney said: “We literally have customers queuing up for rack space in the Sharp Project both from the public and private sectors. As Cloud Computing gathers momentum and our NationalCloud takes the pain away from people trying to run their own infrastructure I can see us taking up the additional 20, 000 sq ft of space just around the corner.”
