Tenants move in to The Sharp Project’s Phase 3 work space

The Sharp Project in East Manchester, a hub for digital and creative companies, has signed up the first new tenants, for the third and final phase of the 200,000 sq ft digital content complex.

The new companies moving into the ‘Gold’ Phase 3 section of the building include Playface, a sports software and digital media solutions company and Fac365 who provide crew, facilities and equipment for the broadcast industry.

The 30,000 sq ft space, which is located at the heart of the building, has a mezzanine level with light and airy offices and a glazed roof suitable for office or studio use.  In total there are 28 units that range from 500 sq ft through to 1300 sq ft. This phase has a large communal space in the centre, where a cafe will open later this year, creating a social and event space with wireless connectivity so tenants can get together over a coffee and network or hold meetings with clients.

New tenant, Mark Chadwick, Director of Playface said: “The Sharp Project is the ideal location for us.  It’s close to the city centre but also right at the heart of the Eastlands development area and world leading sports facilities.

Mike Hayes, Managing Director of fac365 said: “We chose the Sharp Project for the vibrant atmosphere and sense of community spirit it will bring.”

Sue Woodward, Director for The Sharp Project said: “This part of the building adds to the range of working environments we can offer new tenants and existing ones who want to expand into a larger space. It’s great that we also have companies who started off in shipping containers, and now want to move into bigger units as they grow.  Our vision, to create our own eco-system where start-ups can flourish within a vibrant business community, is becoming a reality, which is fantastic.  The Sharp Project has always been more than just a building and always will be.”

This not-for-profit initiative is led by urban regeneration company, New East Manchester on behalf of site owners Manchester City Council.  Eddie Smith, chief executive of New East Manchester added: “Phase 3 is at the heart of the building and will become an important hub for tenants to meet, network and socialise. With the glass roof, this part of the original building has been completely transformed into a modern, attractive space to work. By providing the right environment, Manchester will remain a key player in this growing sector, bringing jobs and investment to the city.”

Anything Taekwondo, Mancs Can Do Better

The Korean martial art of taekwondo might not attract the headlines like the UK’s other sporting obsessions, which is probably why it has slipped under the radar that we’re actually rather good at it. Several UK fighters are top ranked for their categories, raising hopes for a successful medal haul in 2012 in both the London Olympics and the Euro Championships which will be held in Manchester. Sky1′s Mount Pleasant – Line Producer Howard Ella talks about filming at The Sharp Project

The hallway of the Mount Pleasant set

Mount Pleasant viewers will recognise this hallway

TV shows can be filmed more or less anywhere. Crews are self-contained units that can be deployed to any location and still keep everyone fed, watered, made up and filmed. If you’ve seen the “making of” Planet Earth films, you’ll know that anywhere really does mean anywhere. So why did Tiger Aspect choose to film Mount Pleasant, Sky1’s first commissioned comedy drama, at The Sharp Project? Line producer Howard Ella (MonroeJoe Maddison’s War, 5 Days, Lewis) postponed his wrap-day beer to talk me through his experience.

New Series filmed at The Sharp Project gets rave reviews

A new eight-part comedy drama filmed at east Manchester’s digital production facility, The Sharp Project, aired for the first time yesterday, Wednesday 24 August at 9pm on Sky1 and Sky1HD and immediately received rave reviews from viewers on Twitter describing it as ‘hilarious’ and ‘the funniest thing for a long time’.

Called Mount Pleasant, produced by Tiger Aspect for BSkyB Ltd, and written by Shameless writer Sarah Hooper, the series is based around the life and loves of a thirty-something Mancunian couple and follows the complicated lives of their friends, workmates and ever-present parents.

Stars of the show include Sally Lindsay (Coronation Street) who takes the lead role of Lisa and Daniel Ryan (Skins, Just William) as her husband Dan.

Based in the electronics company Sharp’s old electronics warehouse in Newton Heath, The Sharp Project provides low cost spaces for creative companies in the media and digital sectors, providing easy access to high end, cutting edge technology.

The new £16.5m digital media production complex aims to create a ‘counter-corporate’ location for likeminded creative companies that will complement rather than compete with MediaCityUK in Salford.

The Project is funded by Manchester City Council, the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and the European Regional Development Fund. Led by urban regeneration company New East Manchester, Bramall Construction is undertaking the construction work on the refurbished building which has been designed by PRP Architects.

Set Your Dolly Free: Flyka Glides In

People who use swans as a metaphor for grace being driven by hidden exertion must never have visited a film set. The amount of stuff going on behind the camera and dangling over actors’ heads gives little clue about the polished finished product. Inside the industry, though, the quest to simplify the back end has been an ongoing one, the cameras themselves being a case in point. Static scenes are simple enough – just mount a camera and you’re away. And moving along a straight line can be done using rails. But when it comes to filming things that are moving from a close perspective or where rails cannot be put down, the results can be unconvincing or unintentionally amusing.

Summit to Do in Manchester: THE SHARP PROJECT Opens its Doors

All that was missing was a ringmaster as a circus atmosphere blasted its way into every nook and node of THE SHARP PROJECT on Wednesday night. Coloured light sprayed the darkened walls; the spectrum of musical moods poured forth from invisible speakers; and over 450 people immersed themselves in it all while tenants threw open their doors and invited them in to their workplaces. The occasion? The formal opening of THE SHARP PROJECT – a celebration of what has been achieved and a media-spangled vision of what is to come.

“THE SUMMIT aims to provide Manchester with a strategic development plan by the industry and for the industry that the industry drives forward,” comments THE SHARP PROJECT Director Sue Woodward. “It is vital that we work together to compete internationally and we are delighted that key individuals have signed up so quickly and enthusiastically to that vision.”

Mark Harrison, Controller of Production, BBC North; Sinead Greenaway Chief Executive, The Studios, MediaCityUK and Dave Moutrey, Director of The Cornerhouse and Board Member of Corridor Manchester, have all committed to attending THE SUMMIT on the afternoon of the 001 Event of THE SHARP PROJECT.

Paul Jones Shoots Sharp

Tours of The Sharp Project are often guided, whistle-stop affairs; it’s too spread out to allow tourists to dwell on any single part, and you end up taking away merely an impression of the place, rather than a coloured-in diagram. The odd thing is that this mental sketch is actually more accurate than the details would be. It’s a space, after all, and it’s what goes on in it and in the minds of its inhabitants that matters. Manchester photographer Paul Jones captures this spirit impeccably in his expertly shot ’n’ shuffled series, the result of a day’s wandering and a week’s Photoshopping.

Gadget Geeks Given a Glimpse of Sharp

Monday 7 March saw the broadcast of the heavily trailed Gadget Show which featured Suzi Perry and Jason Bradbury presenting the programme whilst not being there. Yes, for one night only, Suzi and Jason were substituted with their virtual selves; Jason took the form of a hauntingly realistic latex android and Suzi “became” a motion-captured projection, her voice and movements being digitised whilst her virtual self was “in” the Birmingham studio. (We’ll know the digital revolution has happened when those scare quotes disappear – and they won’t have been deleted by a human.)
